PRESERVATION ARCHITECT

Responsibilities: Responsibilities include documentation, conditions assessments and design of interventions on a variety of existing buildings. The Historic Preservation projects that applicant will be assigned to include a combination of conservation (interior restoration, building envelope repairs), adaptive reuse and rehabilitation (interior and exterior alterations). The position requires working directly with the firm's Principal and the rest of the staff on assessing the nature and condition of existing historic properties (mostly designated Landmarks or Landmark-quality buildings); developing design solutions and preparing Construction Documents for interior renovations and exterior repairs; FISP inspection and reporting; assisting with filing the proposed work with regulatory agencies (LPC, DOB, SHPO, NPS, etc.); spearheading the bid procurement and construction contract administration phases; and reviewing the Contractor's work, samples and submittals during the construction phase. Other responsibilities include coordinating the project progress with the Project Manager and the Principal; updating office marketing material; and assisting with in-house business development tasks.

Qualifications: An understanding of historic buildings' materials and construction assemblies, as well as their decay patterns and causes of deterioration. The ability to detail and specify appropriate repairs is required. Experience with both building envelope repairs and interior renovation projects is also desired, including submission to, and approval by LPC, SHPO and DOB. Adaptability to a dynamic work environment coupled with ability to work on multiple projects concurrently while responding timely to deadlines. Experience with preparing Construction Documents and providing Construction Contract Administration services, including site observations; managing contractor submittals and RFIs is essential. We are looking for a motivated, self-driven applicant with excellent communication skills and the ability to fulfill project responsibilities while focusing on clients' needs. Experience with FISP compliance is desired. The ideal candidate would have an architectural degree and/or a M Sc in Historic Preservation or related field, as well as a minimum of four (4) to eight (8) years of previous experience working at an architectural, historic preservation or building envelope consulting firm(s). Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office is required. Hand sketching skills for on-site existing conditions documentation are also required along with willingness to perform fieldwork, including from supported and suspended scaffold. Architectural licensure or progress towards completion of ARE exams is desired but not required. This is a full-time in-person position at our Union Square office. Salary: $75,000 to $85,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
