Colonial Theater
Boston, MA
The oldest operating theater in Boston, the Colonial Theater was in dire need of repair. Collaborating with architectural conservator Jay Cardinal Consultants, we assessed the existing conditions and prepared repair recommendations. Our evaluation encompassed a variety of historic materials and decorative finishes throughout the theater, including the suspended three-coat plaster ceilings and walls; sail vaults; balcony fascia; opera boxes; the proscenium arch and the scagliola columns; as well as the wood and composition doors and frames, wainscots and related ornaments.
By providing the repair recommendations early on, the specialty contractor retained to repair the historic fabric was able to accurately estimate the cost of the required plaster restoration and decorative finish work. It also helped the design team refine the scope of work within the context of the overall project budget and renovation requirements for this historic theater.
