Queen-Anne Oriel
92 St. James Place, Brooklyn, NY
Defined by residential life and buzzing with the hum of the everyday, Clinton Hill is a neighborhood in north-central Brooklyn known for its prominent Italianate and Beaux-Arts homes.
Designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) in 1981, the Clinton Hill Historic District features many residential buildings built between the 1840s and 1930s in contemporary and revival styles. Some are Queen Anne-style rowhouses, like that at 92 St. James Place, an existing three-story building with a basement and cellar, which was one of six built adjacently for Thomas Thorp between 1884 and 1885.
As the Preservation Architect for this property, AYON Studio assessed the building’s existing conditions and prepared restoration and replacement documentation of the home’s upper-floor oriel window, which was in very poor condition. A landmark detail for Victorian-era architecture, oriel windows increase the light and air entering a room while expanding the floor space. Preparing construction documents for the oriel window restoration and window replacement, AYON secured LPC approval for the proposed work and provided construction administration services. We are currently working with the homeowners in additional interior work.
